It is relatively common to get a dry, painful and scratchy throat. This can be due to infections or even dry air. Although most of the time this symptom goes away on its own, sometimes sore throat can be uncomfortable and linger for longer than expected. There are three kinds of sore throats namely Pharyngitis, Tonsillitis and Laryngitis. Pharyngitis affects the area behind the mouth. Tonsillitis involves redness and swelling of the tonsils, the soft tissue in the back of the mouth. Lastly Laryngitis, the swelling and redness of the larynx, the voice box.  Symptoms of dry throat depend on the cause of it, some of which include soreness, rawness, burning, irritated, scratchiness and tenderness. Often sore throat is accompanied by loss of appetite, body aches, chills, coughs, fevers, headaches, hoarse voice, runny nose, nasal congestion, trouble swallowing or even swollen glands in the neck.  You can get temporary relief with the best remedy for sore throat, Herbion all natural cough drops. Causes of Sore Throat

Common Cold, the Flu & Infections

Sore throats are mostly caused by viral infections such as the common cold, influenza also known as the flu, Mononucleosis a disease transmitted via saliva, Measles an ailment which leads to rashes and fevers, Chickenpox an illness which leads to itchy skin, fever and rashes and Mumps an infection which leads to swelling of the salivary glands in the neck.

Bacterial Infections

The most common bacterial infection which causes a sore throat is strep throat. This is caused by a group A Streptococcus bacteria. Other causes for bacterial infections are tonsillitis, gonorrhea and chlamydia.

When the immune system is compromised with allergy triggers such as grass, pollen and pet dander, it releases chemicals which cause nasal congestion, sneezing, watery eyes and throat irritation. Surplus mucus created in the nose during this illness can drip in the back of the throat and can further lead to irritation of the throat.

Dry Air

Arid air and a lack of humidity can lead to irritated mouth and throat, leaving them dry and itchy. Areas where summer is sweltering, may experience this weather, and places, where the heater is running in winter months, suffer it too.

Sometimes substances and chemicals in the air can lead to an irritated throat. Examples of which are cigarette and tobacco smoke, air pollution and cleaning products.

Getting a piece of food lodged in the throat can lead to a sore throat. Similarly, an injury to the neck can lead to pain in the throat as well. If you are one to shout and scream a lot or are a professional singer, then it is no surprise to you that this can lead to a dry throat.

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)

This condition causes the acid from the back of the stomach to travel into the esophagus, the tube which carries food from the mouth to the stomach. Symptoms of heartburn and acid reflux are experienced when the acid burns the esophagus and throat.

If your sore throat does not go away after a few days, it could be a warning sign of cancer. A tumor of the voice box, throat or tongue can also be a cause for dry throat, but it is considerably rare.
